WEATHER: MARCIA, MARCIA, MARCIA!

cyclone-marcia

Cyclone Marcia is closing in on the Queensland coast tonight, and is expected to cross between Rockhampton and Mackay. There is an associated trough stretching south and this is expected to cause all the problems for south east Queensland and north east New South Wales. The rain will start to increase across these regions from tonight and the next two days will see heavy down pours increase to the point where flooding is likely. Winds are continuing to build and so the swell combining with the biggest tides of the year to date. Coastal inundation and erosion is also expected. Along that trough another low is expected to form in the Tasman which will generate increased swell over the weekend. Read More »

WEATHER: CYCLONE MAY COME DOWN THE COAST

WEATHER_CHAT_GAV_WEB

There are numerous lows forming along the monsoon trough at the moment, one of them may become a concern to us later in the week. The low in the Coral Sea may head south affecting the south east Queensland coast around Thursday and the northern New South Wales coast by the weekend. These systems have an unpredictable nature so it is a system we have to watch closely. If the low heads south, it will bring with it a large amount of rain that would have the potential to cause flooding. Sea surface temperatures are very warm at the moment and that will help maintain the strength of the storm if it does head south. I’ll check the development of this system every day, so stay tuned, we may have to prepare for this one in the coming days. Read More »

WEATHER: COASTAL SHOWERS EASING

The northern New South Wales coast and south east Queensland has had a consistent run of showers, with some heavy localised falls.¬†This shower activity is going to ease across the weekend. The onshore winds will still be with us, making for more humid days and nights. The Hunter has seen a few small showers and the occasional storm. It should be predominantly fine across the region this weekend, with the chance of shower development on the small side. Still warm and dry inland across the North West and Plains. A moderate swell for surfers – southern corners in the north and northern corners in the south the tip. Moderate seas and swell for boating. Read More »

WEATHER: EXTREMELY WARM SEA TEMPERATURES

Going for an ocean swim this week? Chances are you will notice how incredibly warm the water is. The cooler side of the scale is 22 to 23 degrees around Newcastle and the Central Coast, but head further north and things get a little crazy, with water temperatures from Coffs Harbour to Byron up to 28 degrees. The warm ocean temperatures are helping to produce very humid conditions along the coast, with isolated showers thanks to consistent onshore winds driving the moist air in towards the mountains. Inland, the hot dry run will continue for the rest of the week. Read More »

WEATHER: A VERY CONSISTENT WEEK AHEAD

Weather Borders ranges

The forecast for the rest of the week is looking very similar. Moist onshore winds will create partly cloudy skies, with the occasional isolated shower falling on the eastern side of the Divide. Inland it is going to remain very hot and dry. It’s all thanks to a slow moving high over the southern Tasman. Read More »

WEATHER: SMILES ALL ROUND

There shouldn’t be too many grumpy faces at the moment. Farmers have enjoyed some wonderful rain, wine makers have their sunshine back and surfers are in for an awesome weekend of waves, as the classic southern point breaks turn it on thanks to an east coast low in the south. The fine run of sunshine, cooler nights and crisp mornings will continue across the weekend, before we see some shower activity return to the coast next week. Read More »

WEATHER: BACK TO A DRY PHASE

weathervallabeach

It has been a very wet start to 2015 across the region, but now the clouds are getting ready to clear and the sun to return, especially inland from tomorrow. Along the coast there is going to be plenty of swell thanks to an intense east coast low, luckily forming a long way to the south and well offshore. The swell will be bigger along the Central Coast and Hunter. The occasional coastal shower will be possible, but generally speaking, it is going to be fine until early next week when the coastal showers will return with moderate falls expected once again.
