NSW GOVERNOR TOURS YOUTH CENTRE

In a whirlwind trip to the North West, the Governor of New South Wales David Hurley visited Tamworth today. While heavy fog in the region this morning delayed Mr Hurley’s flight from Sydney, he arrived in Tamworth at lunch time to visit the newly completed Tamworth Regional Youth Centre. Mr Hurley and his wife toured the $3-million facility and met with staff. The governor was then presented with two shirts from youth services co-ordinator Stephen Blanch. “We just want to say thank you very much to everyone who’s involved in this. Beginning on May 6, four public workshops will be held across the region, as council undertakes a full review of its drought management plan. FIVE REBELS BIKIE MEMBERS CHARGED

Five members of the Rebels Motorcycle Gang have been charged with a string of drug offences in Tamworth today. The men were arrested after a series of search warrants were carried out, including one at the Rebels Club House. Police have been investigating the gang’s alleged involvement in supplying amphetamines and methylamphetamines in the area since July last year. Read More »

MEDICINAL CANNABIS CAMPAIGNER PASSES AWAY

Tamworth local Dan Haslam, well-known for his push to legalise the use of medicinal cannabis, has passed away. The 25-year-old suffered terminal bowel cancer and used cannabis to relieve his symptoms. Following a tireless 11-month campaign by Dan and his family, he received the state’s second-ever medical cannabis license earlier this month. Premier Mike Baird says he’s deeply saddened by his passing. “Dan made a lasting impression on everyone he met, but, more than that, he left a legacy in NSW that will be felt across the nation, and I believe the world,” he said. “Every step we take on medical cannabis will be built on the footsteps he left behind.” Read More »

ELDERLY MAN DIES IN FORKLIFT ACCIDENT

A 76-year-old man has died after he became trapped under a forklift near Tamworth. Emergency services were called to the Moonbi property just after 1pm yesterday. Police say the forklift rolled into a creek bed and pinned the man. A trauma doctor amputated the man’s legs to free him, but he passed away at Tamworth Base Hospital a short time later. A team of specialist police officers and the dog squad have arrived in Tamworth, where a man has barricaded himself inside a house. The man has been in the premises on Susanne Street since 12:45 this afternoon. It’s believed the man may have been involved in a police pursuit earlier today, which ended on Robert Street.
