EARLY SETBACK FOR WORLD CHAMPION MICK FANNING

Reigning world champion Mick Fanning, has suffered an early setback at surfing’s first world tour event on the Gold Coast. Fanning and Lennox Head’s Adam Melling were both relegated to the repecharge round by American Dane Reynolds. Needing a solid score in the dying stages of his heat, Joel Parkinson found a rare barrel to advance to round three. “Can he get out? Parko in out, does it, gets it done.” 10 time world champ Kelly Slater also survived, producing a late 6.4 to overcome Port Macquarie’s Matt Banting and Matt Wilkinson from the Central Coast. KITE SURFER SLAMMED ON ROCK WALL

Panic at the Broadwater yesterday afternoon, when a kite-surfer lost control in strong winds, and slammed into the rock wall – his kite ending up in powerlines.
