LOCAL LEAGUE CLUBS IN DRUG SCANDAL

Two local rugby league clubs have been embroiled in a doping scandal. The pair of “a-grade” players – from the Southport Tigers and the Tugun Seahawks – have been handed two year bans after testing positive to performance enhancing drugs. The tests were conducted by the Sports Anti-Doping Authority last year after the Bycroft Cup semi final between the two teams. Queensland Rugby League has issued a statement, saying “we make no apology for the testing regime to ensure we keep drugs out of the sport.” Read More »

TAKE TWO OF CHINESE NEW YEAR

Due to last weekend’s chaotic weather, a belated Chinese New Year will be celebrated tomorrow, with a fireworks show bigger than the Broadwater’s New Year’s Eve display. Southport will come alive from 3 o’clock with pop-up Asian food stalls, followed by fireworks from the rooftops at nine. “Chinatown will just get bigger and bigger as it goes through the circle, and of course $15 million Australia Fair project finishes in July so you’ll see more Asian restaurants in there too.” Council says the markets will be a monthly feature. THOUSANDS TURN OUT TO PROTEST BROADWATER DEVELOPMENT

Thousands of Gold Coasters descended upon Southport today, protesting against what could become the biggest regional tourism project in Australia. ASF Consortium plans to transform Wavebreak Island into a seven and a half billion dollar cruise ship terminal…complete with a glitzy 50 storey high rise, hotels, restaurants, and a bridge connecting to Labrador. “I’m concerned that there hasn’t been proper studies about the environmental impacts so far, and that seems to be being glossed over by the govenrment.” The group behind the plans, says an environmental impact study is the next step… “At this stage of the project we don’t have all the answers and we will be working with the coommunity, undertaking appropriate engineering and technical studies to ensure that there’s a net environmental benefit for the Gold Coast.” Read More »

ACCUSED MURDERER RELEASED ON BAIL

A Southport man, who allegedly killed his neighbour by putting him in a chokehold, has been granted bail. 23 year old Sanchez is alleged to have murdered his neighbour, Kane Barry during a fight outside their Southport unit block in September. The court heard claims, Barry had earlier threatened to attack Sanchez with a knife. Read More »
