WANDERERS BEAT BEACHES IN A SPITEFUL CLASH AT BELMONT

NHRU Round 10 THE WARATAHS 46 – MAITLAND 33 HAMILTON 43 – UNIVERSITY 17 NELSON BAY 48 – EASTS 10 LAKE MACQUARIE 17 – MEREWETHER 11 WANDERERS 24 – SOUTHERN BEACHES 14 In Newcastle and Hunter rugby, the Tahs are back on track, Hamilton belted Uni and Nelson Bay scored its first win. The Roos beat the Greens, Wanderers won the clash with Beaches. The game was a chance for Beaches to raise funds for HMRI, the visitors weren’t feeling charitable. At times there were more punches than passes. With the wind at their backs, the Two Blues finally crossed thanks to Andrew Katoa. TRIBUTE FOR BRITISH AND IRISH LIONS FIRST CAPTAIN IN TELARAH

The British and Irish Lions take on a Combined Country side at Hunter Stadium tonight, but earlier today, members of the touring party paid a special tribute to the team’s first captain. Robert Seddon drowned while boating on the Hunter River during the Lions’ tour of Australia in 1888. He was laid to rest at Telarah cemetery. BARBARIANS PREPARE FOR ENGLISH UNIVERSITY

The build-up to the Lions clash continues tonight, with the Newcastle Barbarians set to take on Durham University at Number Two Sportsground in around 45 minutes. For Hamilton’s Nick Palmer, it’s a chance to make up for lost time, after the second rower missed out on this year’s representative campaign because of injury. “I haven’t played against an international side before so this is a big opportunity for me.” Despite the Barbarians being the underdogs, coach Scott Coleman wants his side to have some fun against its English opponent. “The only kicks we can do is attacking kicks, so it’s going to be a running game of football, he wants us to throw it around and play really attacking.” Read More »

In other games, Southern Beaches upset Hamilton, the Roos beat the Bay. Wanderers held on to beat Maitland, while the Greens hammered Easts at Townson Oval. Looking to kickstart their season, Easts crossed early through Marty Lisiua. But Merewether soon found another gear, Sam Bright putting the Greens in front.
