WESTS BOOK THE FIRST PLACE IN 2013 REAL NRL GRAND FINAL

NEWCASTLE RUGBY LEAGUE Major Semi Final WESTS 22 – SOUTHS 12 Wests are the first team through to the Real NRL grand final, after edging out Souths in the major semi. The Rosellas made a great start, Justin Smith forcing his way over. As usual, there was no love lost between the two local rivals. But the fans had to wait until the end of the first half for Wests to extend their lead through Jermaine Ale. The home side made it 16-nil shortly after the break thanks to Peter Manion. Souths finally broke through Lewis Schneider to get within 10 points. Another try to Smith gave the Rosellas breathing space, but Jerome Wilson gave the Lions some late hope. In the end, this play summed up the day for Souths .. the Lions now face Kurri next weekend. Read More »

KURRI CRUSHES MACQUARIE WITH A MASSIVE COMEBACK

NEWCASTLE RUGBY LEAGUE Minor Semi Final KURRI KURRI 48 – MACQUARIE 30 Kurri has produced a remarkable comeback to knock Macquarie out of the Real NRL finals. It was a different story in the first half. Following an early Kurri try, the Scorps hit back through Adam Swadling. A simple backline move fell to Matt Hay who danced over for Macquarie. The Scorpions went through the hands again, Liam Mecham with a four pointer. When Blake Gallen chipped for Andy Sumner, the lead blew out to 18 points. But when Scott Dunn scored a badly needed try for the Bulldogs, Kurri held their momentum all the way home. Read More »

SOUTHS OUTCLASS SCORPIONS IN REAL NRL FINALS

Souths have won a see-sawing qualifying semi final against Macquarie in the Real NRL. The home side kicked off the scoring through Nathan Cantor. Souths hit back with a try to fellow fullback Dan Stuart. This incident saw Cantor limp from the field. But the Scorpions went further in front when Jarred Edwards intercepted Dane Queenan’s pass. Souths began to expose cracks in the Scorpions defence, as Scott Briggs eased over. The Lions will now play Wests in the grand final qualifier. Read More »

ROSELLAS CLAIM REAL NRL MINOR PREMIERSHIP

In the Real NRL Wests have won the minor premiership thanks to a big win over Macquarie. The Rosellas put on a clinic, Simon Williams grabbed the first try inside five minutes. Joel Penny made it look easy as he doubled the advantage. Wests were scoring a point a minute as Warren Schillings helped to make it 18-nil. When Williams teed up Penny, the Scorpions premiership dreams were all but over. The Rosellas earn a week off, while Cessnock host Kurri in the major semi on Saturday, Macquarie play Souths on Sunday. Read More »

SCORPIONS STILL CHASING ONE MORE WIN IN THE REAL NRL

NEWCASTLE RUGBY LEAGUE Round 17 CESSNOCK 26 – KURRI KURRI 16 MAITLAND 58 – CENTRAL NEWCASTLE 24 SOUTHS 28 – MACQUARIE 26 In Newcastle Rugby League Cessnock has beaten Kurri to stay in third spot, while Maitland’s win over Central saw the Pickers leapfrog the Bulldogs into the top five. At Toronto, the Scorpions needed a win over Souths to claim the minor premiership but the Lions had other ideas. Two early tries put the visitors in front. Macquarie hit back as Jarred Edwards scored out wide, before Mick Moran gave the Scorpions hope with a try under the posts. But the depleted home side couldn’t hold out, as Chris Knight ensured Souths would qualify for the finals. Read More »

LIONS ROAR TO KEEP THEIR REAL NRL FINALS HOPES ALIVE

NEWCASTLE RUGBY LEAGUE Round 16 MAITLAND 34 – LAKES 20 CESSNOCK 46 – CENTRAL NEWCASTLE 6 SOUTHS 29 – WESTS 6 In the Real NRL, the top two teams lost in round 16, while Maitland, Cessnock and Souths all kept themselves in the running for the finals. Leading Wests 19-nil at half time, Souths extended their lead shortly after the break through Ryan Pywell. The defending champions were literally having their pants pulled down, but even with Todd Hurrell and Jerome Wilson sent to the bin, the Lions held their nerve. Hooker Joe Cudmore wrapped up the points for the home side. Nothing was going right for the Rosellas, with a late try to Simon Williams a simple consolation. Read More »
