SCORPIONS BEAT MAITLAND IN REAL NRL ROUND 11

In the Real NRL, Kurri edged out Cessnock, Lakes scored a big upset against Souths. Macquarie beat Maitland to take third spot. The Scorpions hit the front when Chris Hyde set up Royce Geoffry. Hyde got lucky next time around, his pass fooled a few players, before Shane Beale grabbed a try. When the Pickers chanced their arm at the other end, Ryan Lacy dived over to get Maitland on the board. Andy Sumner had plenty of input into Macquarie’s next four pointer, starting and finishing the long range effort. The Pickers got back into the game thanks to Terrence Seu Seu. NEWCASTLE EDGED OUT IN COUNTRY LEAGUE FINAL

Illawarra has won its second straight Country Rugby League title, beating Newcastle in a thrilling final at Tamworth today. Illawarra hit the front midway through the first half, Wayne Bremner with a spectacular try from an Eamon Hillen kick. Newcastle skipper Chris Adams provided a bullet pass to help Royce Geoffrey to a try. The Rebels were in front 14-12 at half time, but Illawarra hit back with a long range effort involving Blake Phillips and Hillen. When Geoffrey scored again, Newcastle was in front 20 points to 18. But the lead was set to change for the eighth and final time, as Jason Raper helped Illawarra to back to back crowns. Seven Rebels were then selected for the Country side. Country Firsts Team: 1. REBELS OVERCOME SLOW START TO BEAT CANBERRA

In the semi finals of Tier One of the Country Rugby League Championships, Newcastle overcame a slow start to beat Canberra 34-28. Canberra raced out of the blocks as Carl Johnston and Dwayne Connors combined for the first try. Just a minute later, a move down the same side produced the same result, as Connors bagged a double. Newcastle’s left edge defenders were playing like matadors, as David Howell crashed over to make it 16-nil. The Rebels needed a push and fittingly it came from a man they call Truck. CHRIS ADAMS TO LEAD THE REBELS INTO BATTLE

He was selected ahead of Terrence Seu Seu and Chris Hyde for the hooking role in the Newcastle rep side, now Cessnock’s Chris Adams will have the honour of captaining the Rebels, when they take on Canberra in the semi-finals of the Country Championships tomorrow. The coach says it’s not just his NRL experience or his current form that got Adams over the line. “He speaks well among the guys, highly respected, he’s made a big commitment to the side.” The clash takes place at Wyong at 11:45, while the Greater Northern Tigers face the North Coast in the Tier Two semi at 10.
