Confirmation today that Melbourne Cup winner, Protectionist, will have his first serious hit-out since the great race in a 1,200-metre barrier trial at Broadmeadow on Monday. The German import is then expected to head to Melbourne to run in the Group 2 Peter Young Stakes at Caulfield on February 28. The Newcastle Jockey Club’s biggest week of racing has begun, with a special barrier draw for Thursday’s Gold Cup. Top weight Destiny’s Kiss will start from barrier one, while local trainer Kris Lees has three runners in the main event, including Taree Cup winner, Slivovitz. The Lees stable will also saddle up Slow Pace in Wednesday’s Cameron Handicap. “He’s quite capable fresh, he just got beat in the Newmarket back in autumn, we’re thinking he’ll have a good preparation, improve on his run on Wednesday, he’s a place chance.” Lees had reason to celebrate today, with Lucia Valentina winning horse of the year, while the Paul Perry trained Scratch Me Lucky was named the best two-year-old. PAUL PERRY CLAIMS NJC TRAINERS TITLE

Paul Perry has taken out the Newcastle trainers premiership, claiming two races at Broadmeadow this afternoon. He and Kris Lees were tied on 19 wins at the start of the meeting, but Archibald gave Perry the upper hand after race three. [Notes:1.20.53] He increased his lead in race five. “Off the Bench giving chase but Over In Killarney is clear, Perry goes two in front.” Lees finally tasted success in race eight thanks to Parraay, but it was Perry who secured the title.
