PHOTOS RELEASED AFTER MAN ALLEGEDLY EXPOSES HIMSELF

Police are appealing for information, after a man allegedly exposed himself to a woman at Waratah West over the weekend. A 24-year-old international student was at a bus stop along University Drive on Sunday afternoon, when police say a man sat next to her, exposed himself and committed a lewd act. Police have now released photographs of a man they believe could assist with their enquiries. He’s described as being Caucasian in appearance, around 50 years old, with a slim build. He was last seen wearing blue football shorts, a dark shirt and cap. Read More »

WORK ON RAIL CORRIDOR CONTINUES

Work continues to move forward along Newcastle’s rail corridor, with a pedestrian crossing extending from Wolfe Street. At around 7:30 this morning council workers were seen laying matting across the rail line, before applying packing sand. Meanwhile an appeal against a Supreme Court finding that the state government needs Parliament’s approval to cut the rail line, has been set down for early March. Read More »

BEACHES TO REMAIN CLOSED FOR FIFTH DAY

Newcastle City Council says beaches between Stockton and Merewether will remain closed for a fifth consecutive day, following continued sightings of a large great white shark. Lifeguards say a shark of this size – believed to be five metres and weighing 1700 kilograms – has never been seen before around Newcastle. It’s been sighted every day since Saturday and was last spotted by a police boat at Burwood beach late yesterday. Council says it’s waiting for a 24-hour period of no sightings before it reopens beaches. Anyone eager to swim, is urged to use the ocean baths. Read More »

The Samurai Blue has bid farewell to Newcastle for now, with a small crowd gathering to see players, following their light training run this morning. Last night, Japan was in cruise control against Palestine. “Out it comes to Kagawa … and it’s deflected in for the second goal.” Kagawa turned provider after the break, as the defending champions put the result beyond doubt, 4-nil. “He’s able to turn and cross and there is the fourth goal for Japan.” In other positive news, the Hunter Stadium pitch passed its first test of the Asian Cup. EMPLOYEE THREATENED DURING ATTEMPTED ARMED ROBBERY

Police are appealing for information, after the attempted armed robbery of a fast food restaurant in Mayfield last night. Just after 11pm, a man wearing a Spiderman mask threatened a 24-year-old employee with a knife. The man demanded cash from the safe, but was told it couldn’t be opened due to a time-lock system. He then ran from the store empty handed. The man’s been described as being in his late teens, about 150-centimetres tall, with a thin build. GREAT WHITE SIGHTING CLOSES BEACHES FOR THIRD DAY

Beaches between Stockton and Merewether have been closed for a third consecutive day, after a great white shark was again spotted in the area. Lifeguards say the sightings are unusual, and they’re urging people to heed to the warnings. Read More »

NEWCASTLE BEACHES CLOSED FOR MOST OF DAY AFTER SHARK SIGHTING

Beaches between Stockton and Redhead were closed for most of today, after a shark was again spotted in the area. It was first seen just metres offshore at Merewether yesterday. Lifesavers sighted the shark again just after midday, at the northern end of Nobbys Beach. Newcastle Beach was deemed safe to re-open late this afternoon, while the remaining beaches will be re-evaluated before patrols begin tomorrow morning. (VISION ONLY) Read More »

THREE TEENAGERS CHARGED AFTER PURSUIT

Three teenagers have been charged after allegedly stealing a car and leading police on chase from Newcastle to the Central Coast yesterday. Police allege a 15-year-old boy stole a white Toyotal Corolla from Sydney’s west last Saturday. It’s alleged the car was used in a series of robberies around Newcastle over the weekend. Police spotted the car at around 1pm yesterday at Shortland, and initiated a pursuit which was later called off. The car was then sighted south at Berkeley Vale, and another pursuit – involving Polair – ended at Woy Woy with the arrests of three youths. A 15-year-old boy will face children’s court today, charged with a string of driving and robbery offences. Meanwhile a 15-year-old boy and 16-year-old boy – both from the Central Coast – will appear in court next month. Read More »

POLICE INVESTIGATE ROBBERIES IN SHORTLAND AND CALLAGHAN

Police are investigating two overnight robberies in the neighbouring suburbs of Shortland and Callaghan. A 35-year-old man was walking out of Tuxford Park just before 8pm, when he was approached by four men. After handing over some personal items, he was punched in the face. Meanwhile, a 23-year-old man was walking towards the University of Newcastle campus at around 10:30pm, when a car pulled up nearby. Three men demanded his personal belongings, before assaulting him.
