Newcastle Knights skipper Kurt Gidley has announced he’s signed a one-year contract with the Warrington Wolves in the English Super League. The Newcastle local has played 236 NRL games, in a career spanning 15 years. Gidley also boasts an impressive representative track record, including 12 appearances in the NSW State of Origin and 12 for Australia. “I have been lucky, to grow up in Newcastle, to have my family’s support and to play for this great Club,” he said. Newcastle police have stepped up their fight against illegal drag racing, blocking access to known ‘hoon’ hotspots across the city. Last night officers joined Roads and Maritime Services in locking down Kooragang Island, the Steel River Industrial Estate and Wharf Road at Nobbies Beach. The move forms part of Operation Hammer, which aims to crackdown on dangerous driving. “We will continue to deploy police to block access to the known street-racing strips and ‘burn out’ locations until these drivers realise they are not welcome here,” said Superintendent John Gralton. “If we catch them breaking the law, they risk not only a substantial fine and possibly a criminal driving record, but potential deregistration of the vehicle.” Read More »

Four Newcastle Jets players have today been informed they will not be re-signed for the 2015-16 A-league season. Among the surprise exits is Hunter-bred junior Taylor Regan, along with utility Sam Gallagher, goalkeeper John Solari and James Virgili. 26-year-old Regan has played his entire career with the Jets, starting in the club’s National Youth League team. Meanwhile Max Burgess remains in discussions with the club, while Equadorian attacker Edson Montano is under consideration by management. It’s also negotiating to retain Enver Alivodic. “Today the coaching staff had to deliver some tough decisions to some great people. It’s official, Newcastle has a new claim to surfing fame. The Guinness World Records has now officially listed the city as holding the record for the longest line of surfboards. It comes after its attempt on February 15, which saw 608 boards lined up, stretching 1.2-kilometres along Nobbys Beach.
