Parting Newcastle Knights coach Wayne Bennett has chosen Alex McKinnon and Beau Scott as recipents for his Coach’s Award. At last night’s club presentation, Bennett spoke fondly of the two, including how much he admired McKinnon’s strength of character after he suffered a spinal injury earlier in the year. “I was proud of him before the incident. Obviously he was special from the time I first saw him at the Dragons, but I’ve even been more proud of him now because he’s made our job so much easier for the way he’s conducted himself,” he said. BEAU SCOTT NAMED ‘SECOND ROWER OF THE YEAR’

Newcastle Knight, Beau Scott, has been named ‘Second Rower of the Year’ at last night’s Dally M awards. It caps off a successful season for the 30-year-old, which has seen him play in the New South Wales Origin and Country representative teams. Scott has also recently been selected in the Prime Minister’s XIII, to play Papua New Guinea next month. He’ll join 18-year-old Sione Mata’utia in the squad, which combines experienced players with the NRL’s most promising young talent. Read More »

MICHAEL HAGAN RETURNS TO KNIGHTS IN NEW ROLE

Former Newcastle Knights captain and premiership-winning coach, Michael Hagan, has returned to the club in a newly-created role. Hagan has been appointed Director of Football, which will see him take responsibility for the entire football department and provide support to head coach Rick Stone. The role will also focus on managing the player list and recruitment, as well as implementing leadership programs. Hagan says he’s looking forward to returning to the club. “After some time away, the timing feels right and I am really excited about the challenge of working back at the Knights.” He’ll start in his new role early next month. Good news for the Knights with four players, including the Mata’utia brothers, picked in the Samoan train on squad, while Beau Scott, Kurt Gidley and Willie Mason were named in the Kangaroos squad. Meanwhile Newcastle has unveiled new additions to the coaching ranks for 2015. Read More »

KNIGHTS UNVEIL NEW COACHES

The Newcastle Knights have announced their coaching line-up for the next two years, following the appointment of head coach Rick Stone. Assisting him will be Craig Sandercock, who has just returned from a coaching stint in the English Super League, as well as former Knight Danny Buderus. Buderus is set to focus on the ruck area of the game and will help educate a number of young up-and-coming hookers. McMANUS AND UATE RULED OUT FOR THE SEASON

Knights wingers James McManus and Akuila Uate have been ruled out for the rest of the season, with Uate undergoing knee surgery late last week. Despite breaking Newcastle’s all-time try scoring record, injury has disrupted Uate’s season, and he’s struggled to find consistency. Jarrod Mullen’s return sees Kurt Gidley shift to fullback, while Beau Scott will play after missing the clash with the Storm because of concussion.
