WEATHER: WET START TO 2015

WEATHER_CHAT_GAV_WEB

Goonengerry in north eastern New South Wales received 290-millimetres overnight from a stalled storm surge. Over 100mm fell nearby. Southport on the Gold Coast received 88-millimetres. More storms are expected tomorrow, with the chance of more localised flash flooding. Storm development will be widespread inland after another hot start to the day. Coastal seabreezes will fan the beach suburbs. Read More »

WEATHER: NEW YEAR’S DAY

The first day of 2015 is going to be very similar to 2014. It’ll be cloud-affected along the coast, with a few brief showers possible in areas including the Hunter. New Year’s Day should be fine, sunny and hot inland, with a greater chance of storms on the northern ranges. Have a Happy New Year! Read More »

WEATHER: HOTTEST DAY IN 11 YEARS FOR COOLANGATTA

weather evans head dee hartin

North east New South Wales and south east Queensland were very hot today, as the sea breeze took a long time to kick in. Coolangatta has only reached 37.1 degrees four times in the past 30 years. Further south, a dry southerly helped keep temperatures down from Coffs Harbour to Gosford. Inland it was even hotter. It will be hot again tomorrow with another trough set to fire up more storms across the region in the afternoon. Read More »

WEATHER: THE TROPICS HAVE COME OUR WAY

STORM1

PHOTO: Thanks to Bec Van G. for this great snap, taken this afternoon at North Arm Cove. The stalled trough has been consistently firing up storms across the region for almost a week now and rain totals are starting to add up for some of the drought stricken areas. Tamworth 100mm. Merriwa, Woolbrook and Cessnock 90mm. Mungindi 70mm. Barraba 50mm. Along the coast it has been very patchy with over 200mm coming down on Dorrigo over the past week, while the drought stricken Mid North Coast has generally received less than 30mm. There is still more to come though. We’ll see the storm activity ease over the next couple of days, remaining focused over the northern ranges. On Thursday we are set to have another widespread burst with the potential to pick up more solid totals. The whole weather trend ... Read More »

WEATHER: RAIN READY TO RAMP UP

weatherrain

Almost all of New South Wales, apart from the far north east, received some rain over the past 24 hours. The heaviest falls were over Sydney from the damaging storms. Cessnock, Pokolbin and Maitland fared okay with 30-millimetres, but totals were mostly small elsewhere, less than 10-millimetres. The rain event is ready to ramp up a gear over the next 24 hours and better rain is expected across the very dry North West. Saturday is also looking good for the broadcast region, before the rain eases off during Sunday. From next Monday, the rain is expected to ramp back up again, with decent follow-up falls continuing into the middle of next week. Read More »

WEATHER: BEST RAIN IN MONTHS

taree_weather_web

The best looking rain system we’ve seen in months will begin to affect the region from tomorrow. Storms have been a regular feature across the northern ranges but it has been far more active across southern New South Wales. This week could be the stormiest for the state during December in a decade. A trough is getting ready to stall over northern New South Wales and eventually form into a cut-off low which is poised to draw south tropical moisture over the next week, possibly 10 days. This period of rain, on and off, has the potential to cause flooding. The relief is very much needed though, after the hottest Spring on record for Australia breaking the record that was set only a year ago. (NO VISION) Read More »

WEATHER: GETTING HOTTER AND STORMIER

Heat is increasing and so to the storm development. Afternoon storms over the Great Dividing Range are now consistently firing up and these isolated cells are rolling off the eastern slopes and across parts of the western slopes, reaching some populated areas. This activity, along with the hot northerly winds, will continue, coming to a crescendo at the end of the week with a widespread rain-belt moving through. There is the chance to pick up follow-up rain early next week from another system. Read More »

WEATHER: HEATING UP FOR THE WEEKEND

Weather Swansea Glen McIntosh

There will be increased sunshine for the coast after a cloudy week with patchy down pours from isolated showers and storms that didn’t penetrate west of the Divide. The good news is things may change next week for the heavily drought affected areas of the North West and Upper Hunter. We’ll watch this new system develop across the weekend and by the middle to end part of next week we should see some rain reach the region. If the projections remain on track, we could receive the best rain months. Let’s hope it comes off as it is desperately needed heading into Summer. Read More »

WEATHER: A FINE WEEKEND AHEAD

weatherBonnyHils

We’ve seen plenty of cloud this week with higher humidity levels and some localised heavy falls coming down across north east New South Wales. Over the next couple of days, including the weekend, things are going to become warmer with increased sunshine. Rain is desperately needed, as this week’s system didn’t deliver the goods to the majority of the region. Next week there is a more promising system brewing, which may deliver the best rain in months. Read More »
