CASINO PREPARES AS THE BEEF WEEK FESTIVAL APPROACHES

The countdown is on to the 2015 Casino Beef Week festival, which begins in just four week’s time. This year the town will embrace princesses and princes as the festival theme of Disney movies is brought to life. The seven day event promises plenty of entertainment including a brand new busking competition which will showcase the region’s most talented musicians. BEAU SCOTT RELEASED FROM KNIGHTS, TO JOIN EELS

Kangaroos back-rower Beau Scott will be released from the final two years of his contract with the Newcastle Knights, on compassionate grounds. It means he’s free to officially sign a three year deal with Parramatta. He joined the Knights in 2013, after a move from St George, and has been one of the club’s most consistent players. “We wish Beau the very best for his future, both personally and professionally, and look forward to him returning to the field and leading our team throughout the remainder of this season,” CEO Matt Gidley said. WEATHER WATCH: TAKE CARE AS WILD WEATHER BATTERS THE COAST

An intense east coast low is forming off the New South Wales Mid North Coast and will unleash the majority of its energy between the Central Coast and Manning, with the Hunter taking the biggest hit. A severe weather warning has been issued and flooding is expected on the Paterson and Williams Rivers. Localised flash flooding is also likely, while huge dangerous swell will develop with gale force winds reaching 100km/h along the Newcastle coast. A four-month old baby girl is fighting for her life, after a car ploughed into the bedroom of her Geelong family home, south-west of Melbourne. The little girl was sleeping with her parents when the vehicle came crashing through. Islamic State has released a video, claiming the massacre of Ethiopian Christians in Libya. The video allegedly shows the beheading of around 15 hostages on a beach, before another 16 are shot in the desert. Rescue aircraft have resumed the search for a pilot and plane that have been missing for two days in central Queensland. TRIBUTES, FOR A YOUNG RUGBY PLAYER FATALLY INJURED DURING MATCH

A 25-year-old rugby union player has died in John Hunter Hospital, after a head clash during a match in the New South Wales north west on Saturday. Nick Tooth was airlifted to Newcastle, after he collapsed during the first grade game between Quirindi and Narrabri. Tributes for the Quirindi local have poured in, with his club saying “the loss of this kind hearted and fine young man will be felt far and wide. The club would like to offer their support to everyone who has been touched by this tragic loss”. Club president, Charles Murray says it was a sad accident. Read More »

WEATHER: RAIN ON THE WAY

We’ve had a very warm week, ahead of a rain band that has already delivered record-breaking falls across parts of South Australia. Some locations have recorded their best April rain in 100 years of records. The cloud cover associated with this system could be seen in Newcastle and the Hunter today. Tomorrow it will spread further north and rain will start to fall Saturday night, before moving across the NBN broadcast region during Sunday. On Monday, an east coast low is expected to form and it could be a nasty one. East coast lows are at their most dangerous when they retrogress or move in a westerly direction back towards the coast once formed. This weekend we will see partly cloudy skies and a few brief showers roll in across the coast, as the inland areas of the Upper Hunter and North West remain dry.
