FOURTH PERSON CHARGED IN RELATION TO WICKHAM PARK MURDER

A fourth person has been charged in relation to the murder of a man at Newcastle earlier this year. Strike Force Harrogate has been investigating the murder of a 52-year-old man, who’s body was found in Wickham Park in March. On Wednesday, detectives applied for the extradition of a 46-year-old man from Queensland and yesterday charged him with concealing a serious offence. GRETA MAN SENTENCED TO 19 YEARS FOR MURDER

A Greta man will spend at least 14 years and three months behind bars for murdering his partner last year. George Robert Ballantyne was sentenced in Newcastle Supreme Court today, after pleading guilty to killing 23-year-old Clare Weston. The mother-of-two was found on the bank of the Hunter River at Abberglasslyn last March. Justice Robert Allan Hulme said Ballantyne had callously left her semi-naked body face down by the riverside. He added, “I accept that he is sad and regretful, but in all the circumstances I am not prepared to find that he is genuinely remorseful.” Ballantyne was sentenced to a maximum of 19 years. ALLEGED MOREE MURDERER REFUSED BAIL

A farmer accused of murdering an unarmed environment officer in the north west, has been refused bail in the New South Wales Supreme court. 79-year-old Ian Turnbull allegedly shot and killed Glen Turner at the back of a property near Moree in July. Prosecutors say it was the culmination of a land-clearing dispute that had been simmering for years. The court today heard that Turnbull had told his wife he “simply cracked”. But Acting Justice Anthony Blackmore believed he would pose a danger to officials and the public if released on bail, saying there was still evidence Turnbull maintained his “vendetta” against the state’s environment authorities. MAN CHARGED AFTER WOMAN’S BODY FOUND

A 55-year-old man has been charged with murder, after the body of a woman was discovered in the backyard of a Central Coast home this morning. Police attended the house at Budgewoi just after midnight, when they found the woman. It’s believed she is aged in her 40s or 50s, but she is still to be formally identified. The man has been refused bail and will face Wyong Local Court today. Read More »

MAN CHARGED OVER TAREE MURDER

A man has been charged with the murder of a woman in Taree overnight. At around 7pm, police were called to a house on Stevenson Street following reports two women had been stabbed. Police found a 39-year-old woman with a stab wound to her abdomen outside. She was taken to Manning Base Hospital for treatment and later released. Meanwhile a 49-year-old woman was found dead inside the home. A 53-year-old man was charged with murder, wounding with intent and breaching an apprehended violence order. TWO TEENAGERS CHARGED OVER FATAL STABBING

Two teenagers have been charged over the fatal stabbing of a man in Port Macquarie’s main street yesterday morning. Just before 2am, four males were involved in a fight outside the Commonwealth Bank on Horton Street. It’s alleged a 16-year-old boy produced a knife and stabbed a 25-year-old man in the chest several times. Police say the boy and his friend fled the scene in a ute, while bystanders went to the injured man’s aid. He was taken to Port Macquarie Base Hospital, but died two hours later. An 18-year-old man attended Kempsey Police Station yesterday afternoon, where he was charged with accessory after the fact to murder. At around 6:45pm, a 16-year-old boy also attended the station – he was charged with murder. Both males will appear in court today. Read More »

TOSTEE IN TROUBLE FOR POLICE ASSAULT, DUI

A Surfers Paradise man accused of murdering a New Zealand tourist has had other matters heard in Southport Court, that are unrelated to the balcony fall death, earlier this month. Gable Tostee is facing four separate charges stemming from incidents in January and July – they include assault or obstruct police and driving under the influence of liquor. His lawyer told the court he was recently charged with another ‘significant matter’, and is now in custody for that. Tostee will apply for bail in the Supreme Court on September eight. Read More »

MAN ACCUSED OF BRISBANE MURDER ARRESTED

A man wanted for questioning over the murder of a Brisbane woman has been arrested on the Gold Coast. A police dog actually brought down Jacob Michael Smith – after he allegedly tried to run from police. Officers swooped on a house at Gaven around 10-thirty after several tip-offs from neighbours. Smith was found in the backyard, it’s believed he’d been hiding out in a granny flat. “I believe that he was trying to avoid detection and he was located by the police dog and as a result he suffered a minor injury from the dog.” Smith has been wanted for questioning over the death of Anthea Mari, her body was found inside her Norman Park home on Monday.
