WORK TO START ON NEW TOURIST ATTRACTION

The first sod has been turned on Coffs Harbour’s newest tourist attraction. Work is about to commence on a $1.6-million water park at the famous Big Banana. The new park will include a 96-metre long slide and a raft ride spanning more than 100-metres. Management says the Big Banana will remain in its traditional spot, despite the major development. Police are appealing for information after a Taree service station was robbed overnight. At around 10 o’clock the attendant at the Victoria Street business was threatened by a man, who demanded cash. He then drove from the scene in an older-model red Camry or Falcon. He’s been described as having an athletic build, wearing a pale jumper and grey cargo pants. Read More »

A Mid North Coast couple have had a sleepless night, trying to contact their son who was backpacking in Nepal when the magnitude 7-point-8 earthquake hit on Saturday morning. 21-year-old Sam Bailey from Bob’s Creek had just finished a 45-day trek through Annapurna with three mates when the earthquake struck. Father, Jon Bailey said he was relieved to hear from his son early Sunday morning. “The building they were at in Pochara, the accommodation he said it felt like riding a tidal wave so they ran out of the building and yeah they were safe out on the street” The group will now try to make their way to India. Bill Spedding has been taken by detectives from his Mid North Coast home. The 63-year-old was arrested by a police strike forceat his Bonny Hills property. It’s expected he will be charged with offences relating to the alleged sexual assaults of two girls, aged three and six, in 1987 in Sydney. Read More »

The parents of three-year-old William Tyrrell have spoken publicly for the first time since his disappearance, making an emotional appeal for his return. William vanished seven months ago from his grandmother’s home at Kendall on the mid north coast. Legal restrictions have prevented his parents from speaking until now, and their identities are not revealed in the video. His mother has begged for her son to be returned. “Just give him back…take him to a church, take him to a police station, take him to school. Give him to someone, give him back,” she said. POLICE FIND SUITCASE OF CASH IN CAR

A woman will face court next month after police found more than $71,000 in her car near Forster. At around 11:30 last night, officers pulled over a Toyota Kluger along the Pacific Highway at Nabaic. The 38-year-old driver from Greenacre, who was travelling with four children in the car, was allegedly doing 128 kilometres per hour in a 100 zone. Police say they searched the car and found the cash inside a suitcase in the boot, and also discovered that the car hadn’t been registered since December last year. The woman was charged with goods in custody and will appear before Taree Local Court in May. Read More »

LUCKY ESCAPE FROM CAR FIRE

There was a lucky escape for six people near Taree this morning, after the car they were travelling in was engulfed by flames. Members of the group – including a 16-year-old boy – were on their way to Armidale for a charity bike ride, when they saw flames at the back of the Mercedes four-wheel drive. They pulled over on the Bucketts Way, and thankfully escaped uninjured… but the same can’t be said for the vehicle and its trailer. Read More »
