FORMER FIREFIGHTER CHARGED WITH LAKE ARSON

A 21-year-old former volunteer fire fighter has been charged with lighting a fire that burnt-out thousands of hectares of bushland at Lake Macquarie and damaged historic homes at Catherine Hill Bay. It’s alleged he lit a grass fire at Mannering Park on the Central Coast on September 29 last year, and another in the same location the following the day. That fire burnt through a section of bushland which reignited on October 17 during scorching temperatures and strong winds. The man had originally been charged with lighting 10 fires on October 1 last year in the Lake Macquarie area during August and September. On the 24th of December the man was issued with a court attendance notice to appear in Toronto Local Court on the further two charges. All 12 charges will be heard on January 15. Read More »

MAP: NEW YEAR’S EVE FIREWORKS PLANNER

Newcastle Foreshore Newcastle Council will only host a 9pm fireworks display this year, after announcing it will cancel its midnight show in a bid to focus on a more family-friendly event. Newcastle and Foreshore Parks are recommended as the best vantage points for the fireworks and there will be no public access to Fort Scratchley and surrounds on the night (see below). If you’re planning to watch the show from Stockton, Griffiths Park and Pitt Street Reserve will be accessible to vehicles from 9am on the day. Vehicles can remain overnight, however no camping is permitted. Nobbys Lighthouse breakwall will be closed from 7pm, with fireworks to be set off from the headland. POLICE RELEASE CCTV FOOTAGE TO SOLVE ROBBERY

Police have released CCTV images in an attempt to solve an armed robbery at Lake Macquarie, that took place more than a year ago. On November 18, 2012, two men armed with a firearm and a metal pole entered a club on Watkins Road, Wangi, and demanded cash. Two shots were fired and a patron was assaulted, before the pair fled with cash. The first man has been described as being tall, with a thin build, the second man is short with a solid build. MAN ARRESTED OVER NEWCASTLE/LAKE MACQUARIE ROBBERIES

A 27-year-old man has been charged in relation to a number of armed robberies in the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie area. At about 10.15 this morning the man was arrested at a property in Nowra and charged with three counts of armed robbery. The charges relate to offences in Lambton, Windale and Dora Creek, where closed premises were targeted. He was refused bail to appear at Nowra Local Court next month. Read More »

WOMEN’S PREMIER LEAGUE Grand Final ADAMSTOWN 4 – LAKE MACQUARIE 3 Adamstown has sprung another grand final upset in the Women’s Premier League, coming from behind to beat Lake Macquarie 4-3. Lake Macquarie took an early lead as Stacey Day cleaned up the scraps. Captain/coach Ashley Wilson was taking no prisoners, but Rhali Dobson should’ve been more ruthless with her shot on goal. Another corner saw the Roosters double their lead, Hayley Crawford claiming the spoils. ADAMSTOWN AND LAKE MACQUARIE INTO WPL DECIDER

In the Women’s Premier League Adamstown will play Lake Macquarie in next weekend’s grand final, after both sides scored comfortable wins today. In the early game, Rosebuds dominated the Emerging Jets. Ash Wilson, Rhali Dobson and Kim Witt were all on target in the 4-nil victory. Lake Macquarie took on Merewether in the other semi and it was Kate Hensman finding the net for Lakes inside 10 minutes.
