The EPA is calling for representatives from the suburbs of Boolaroo, Argenton and Speers Point, to be part of the new Lake Macquarie Lead Community Reference Group. The group will discuss concerns about soil contamination from the former Pasminco smelter. State Independent MP Greg Piper has been named chairman, but another eight members are needed. MAN FOUND FLOATING IN LAKE MACQUARIE

A man, believed to be in his 60s or 70s, has been found dead in Lake Macquarie this morning. Police found the man floating face down near Marmong Point at around 11 o’clock, with a small boat floating nearby. The circumstances surrounding his death are under investigation, but police don’t believe it’s suspicious. The man is yet to be formally identified. Read More »

TERRACOTTA WARRIOR STOLEN

Police are on the lookout for a life-sized, terracotta warrior statue stolen from a Lake Macquarie arcade. Soon after the arcade opened on Tuesday morning, security vision picked up a man making off with the 175 kilogram replica statue, on a shopping trolley. A gift shop owner and the local Chamber of Commerce are appealing for the thief to return the statue. Read More »

SCHOOL DAMAGED BY FIRE

Police are investigating the cause of a fire, which seriously damaged a Lake Macquarie school this morning. Fire fighters arrived at Rathmines Public School at around 12:30 and found the canteen and hall well alight. Crews were able to bring the fire under control. The Department of Education has issued a statement saying all classes are operating as normal. It says it’s looking into alternative temporary canteen arrangements for next week. Read More »

MAN HELD AGAINST HIS WILL AFTER CAR JACKING

A 26-year-old man was forced to drive three people around Lake Macquarie for several hours, following a car jacking late yesterday. Two men entered his car while it was stopped at the intersection of Quigley Road and The Ridgeway at Bolton Point at around 5pm. Police say he was intimidated into driving around the area and picking up a third passenger at Toronto. After three hours, the driver eventually made his way to Cardiff, where he was assaulted and had his personal belongings stolen. The men are described as being of Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander in appearance and between 30 to 50 years old. Anyone with information should contact Lake Macquarie detectives. Read More »

His damaged yacht, Team Vestas Wind, has been transported to the foot of the Italian Alps for major repairs. STOLEN CAR CRASHED IN LAKE MACQUARIE

Two teenagers have been charged after allegedly stealing a car and crashing it at Lake Macquarie. A Nissan Tiida sedan was reported stolen from a property at Eleebana last weekend. Police say the car was seen at a petrol station at Belmont at around 11pm yesterday, before it crashed into a vehicle along the Pacific Highway at Blacksmiths. A 17-year-old boy and 15-year-old boy allegedly ran from the scene. Witnesses managed to detain one boy until police arrived, while the other was tracked down by a police dog. The pair was taken to Charlestown Police Station and charged with a string of offences. Read More »
