HAGAN RETURNS TO NEWCASTLE AS DIRECTOR OF FOOTBALL

The restructure of the Knights continued today with 2001 premiership winning coach Michael Hagan appointed as Newcastle’s first Director of Football. Hagan says the role is designed to take some pressure off the CEO and head coach. “Really looking forward to working with Rick Stone and just being some support to him in that coaching area and also with Matt Gidley and trying to give him some support to allow him to go and do other things in the commercial part of the business.” Hagan begins his new job next month and will also continue in his role as assistant coach with Queensland. MICHAEL HAGAN RETURNS TO KNIGHTS IN NEW ROLE

Former Newcastle Knights captain and premiership-winning coach, Michael Hagan, has returned to the club in a newly-created role. Hagan has been appointed Director of Football, which will see him take responsibility for the entire football department and provide support to head coach Rick Stone. The role will also focus on managing the player list and recruitment, as well as implementing leadership programs. Hagan says he’s looking forward to returning to the club. “After some time away, the timing feels right and I am really excited about the challenge of working back at the Knights.” He’ll start in his new role early next month. Good news for the Knights with four players, including the Mata’utia brothers, picked in the Samoan train on squad, while Beau Scott, Kurt Gidley and Willie Mason were named in the Kangaroos squad. Meanwhile Newcastle has unveiled new additions to the coaching ranks for 2015. Read More »

The Newcastle Knights have announced their coaching line-up for the next two years, following the appointment of head coach Rick Stone. Assisting him will be Craig Sandercock, who has just returned from a coaching stint in the English Super League, as well as former Knight Danny Buderus. Buderus is set to focus on the ruck area of the game and will help educate a number of young up-and-coming hookers. Knights wingers James McManus and Akuila Uate have been ruled out for the rest of the season, with Uate undergoing knee surgery late last week. Despite breaking Newcastle’s all-time try scoring record, injury has disrupted Uate’s season, and he’s struggled to find consistency. A handful of Broncos say they won’t focus on impressing incoming coach Wayne Bennett when Newcastle takes on Brisbane this Saturday night. “For us, our focus is winning and trying to get into the top eight.
