TAX ACTION THREATENS KNIGHTS, JETS AND HSG

The National Rugby League says the future of the Newcastle Knights is safe despite the Australian Tax Office applying for the Knights, Jets and Hunter Sports Group to be wound down over unpaid debts. According to the documents filed in the Federal Court the ATO are chasing debts to the total almost $3-million. But the NRL interim chief executive Shane Mattiske says he is confident the future of the NRL club is not under threat. “In relation to the ownership by Hunter Sports Group, guarantees have been put in place by the Commission to safeguard the Knights position,” Mattiske told AAP. “Those safeguards were a condition of ownership and are there to ensure the club’s future.” Hunter Sports Group says they were surprised by the ATO’s move to appoint a liquidator and that the money owed will be paid. HESKEY A JET? MASTERSTROKE OR MISFIRE

Everyone’s talking as though it’s a done deal. Everyone except the two men who are returning to Newcastle from the UK after tabling a big offer to former England striker Emile Heskey. The 34-year-old is believed to have met with Jets Football manager Robbie Middleby and Hunter Sports Group CEO Troy Palmer, who apparently offered that star a deal worth $1-million a season. It’s believed Heskey only needs to pass a medical. Heskey, who’s played in two World Cups including the last one in South Africa, has been the butt of many jokes in his native England for his lack of success in the goal mouth. He’s played 62 games for his country scoring just seven goals.
