JETS GIRLS HOPING TO SECURE A PLACE IN THE MATILDAS FOR ASIAN CUP

Two of the Jets’ W-League players have arrived on the Gold Coast, hoping to earn a place in the Matildas’ squad for the Women’s Asian Cup in Vietnam in mid-May. Sidelined striker, Joel Griffiths has been cleared to play for the Newcastle Jets, after his former Chinese club Qingdao Jonoon refused to clear him due to a dispute over financial compensation. The Jets finally managed to cut through the red tape, with new coach Clayton Zane keen to throw him into attack for their clash against the Western Sydney Wanderers in Newcastle on Saturday. Griffiths said he’s excited to start his second spell with the Jets. “It will probably be a little bit emotional for me, but once I’m out on the field my only focus will be on giving everything I can for the Newcastle Jets and helping the team get the result we’re after.” It’s a welcome boost for the Jets who are in a scoring drought and have dropped to eight on the A-League ladder. After a weekend of speculation, the Newcastle Jets have sacked coach Gary van Egmond. The sacking comes on the back of a winless streak and dismal performance against the Heart on Friday night, and follows the Jets taking just four points from the last 18 available in the Hyundai A-League competition. TAGGART NOMINATED FOR YOUNG FOOTBALLER OF THE YEAR

Jets striker Adam Taggart has been nominated for Football Federation Australia’s, Young Footballer of the Year. Taggart was also voted as the A-League’s most outstanding U-21 player for the month of November. However the young socceroo is quick to point to the efforts of his team mates as integral to his success. “A lot of the credit has to go to the players around me who have provided me with good service and great support”, he said. The round one blockbuster between the Newcastle Jets and Sydney FC will be the first game televised under a new A-League TV deal. The game to be played at Allianz Stadium on October 11 will be broadcast on SBS across Australia. The corresponding game last year, featuring stars Emile Heskey and Alessandro Del Piero attracted more than 35,000 fans. News of the match came as the draw for the 2013/14 A-League season was unveiled. The Jets will play 14 home games this season, the first against Perth Glory on October 20. Newcastle will have eight Saturday matches, two Friday night games and four Sunday fixtures. They’ll make the long haul trip to Perth and Wellington just once in 2013/14.
