SINGLETON CRASH CLAIMS TWO LIVES

An 18-year-old woman has died in hospital, following a car crash south of Singleton on Saturday afternoon. The woman is the second victim, with a 16-year-old girl also losing her life, when the Toyota Camry they were travelling in left the Golden Highway at Whittingham and hit a tree. The 18-year-old was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a critical condition, but died yesterday afternoon. Local police are assisting officers from the Crash Investigation Unit to investigate the circumstances leading up to the crash. Read More »

PUPPY KILLER SENTENCED TO 18-MONTHS GAOL

A Hunter man will spend at least the next 12-months behind bars for brutally killing nine puppies. 25-year-old Nathan Thompson wept as a sentence of 18-months gaol was handed down in Newcastle Local Court today. Thompson bashed the animals over the head with a rock on March 11, and dumped their bodies in bushland at Kurri Kurri. Only one survived – the aptly named Lucky. The prosecution said the attack was at the top end, in terms of force and brutality, and that the 8-week-old puppies couldn’t protect themselves. The court also heard that Thompson was under the influence of the drug ‘ice’ at the time and he hadn’t slept for a number of days. The defence argued that Thompson is young and can be rehabilitated. THIEVES STEAL VITAL EQUIPMENT FROM SES

Visiting SES volunteers in the Hunter have been dealt a low blow, with thieves stealing thousands of dollars worth of equipment overnight. The crews, from NSW and the ACT, are in the area to help clean up after last week’s devastating storms. They were staying at a hotel in Cessnock when their trucks were broken into last night. Around $3,000 worth of chainsaws and pumps were stolen from four vehicles. The crews will be re-stocked with borrowed equipment from other units so they can continue their clean up work. Read More »

PLANE OUT OF ACTION FOLLOWING STORM

Homes and cars weren’t the only property damaged in last week’s fierce storm in the Hunter. A Jetstar A320 plane, which was parked inside a maintenance hangar at Newcastle Airport in Williamtown, got blanketed in foam after water damage set off a foam fire retardant sprinklers. The aircraft is out of service until it’s been completely washed down and had its flight components checked. Fortunately the engines escaped unscathed. Read More »

STORM BILL TOPS $300-MILLION

Insurance Australia Group has been left with a $300-million bill following last week’s devastating storms. The insurer behind NRMA Insurance and CGU says the storm, which caused widespread damage to the Hunter and Central Coast, will cost it $250-million in claims to customers. Saturday’s sudden hail storm in Sydney is also likely to cost the general insurer $50-million. Meanwhile Ausgrid crews are still working to restore power to 5,500 homes in the Hunter and 2,000 homes across the Central Coast. Read More »

UPDATE: ONE WEEK ON FROM THE CYCLONIC STORM

The clean up continues across the Hunter following last week’s cyclonic storm. As of yesterday, the State Emergency Service had received 18,600 requests for help across the state since last Monday. It says 70 per cent of the jobs have been completed. Meanwhile 20,000 homes in the Hunter and 7,500 on the Central Coast are still without electricity. Extra crews from Sydney have arrived to assist Ausgrid in restoring power to these homes. Read More »
