VAN EGMOND SACKED AS CLAYTON ZANE TAKES CHARGE OF THE JETS

Newcastle has sacked coach Gary Van Egmond, with former Socceroo Clayton Zane to take charge for at least the rest of the season. Friday’s loss to Melbourne Heart proved to be the final straw for van Egmond, as Newcastle slipped out of the top six. A strong finish to the season could see Zane handed the job full time, but for now he’s focused on the finals.   Read More »

ROOSTERS CROW AT THE FIRST FIVE ASIDE FESTIVAL IN NEWCASTLE

As the countdown continues to the Asian Cup 2015, there was plenty of football being played at the Festival of Football, with Lake Macquarie and Maitland squaring off in the final of the five aside competition. Greg Mudd put the first division club in front, before Tyson Fletcher doubled Maitland’s advantage. Sam Walker got the Roosters back in it before the break. Immediately after the restart, his brother Tom scored an impressive double, as Lake Macquarie became the inaugural champions. ASIAN CUP COUNTDOWN CONTINUES IN NEWCASTLE

With a cool breeze blowing in, Foreshore Park in Newcastle was the perfect venue for the inaugural Festival of Football. The five-a-side competition forms part of the countdown celebrations, one year out from Australia hosting the Asian Cup. The trophy even made an appearance for a photo opportunity with 260 players. NBN State League clubs and Maitland are represented across three divisions, including under 14’s, opens and Old Boys, who showed they haven’t lost their touch. The finals begin at midday tomorrow. ADELAIDE COACH FEARS JETS ROUGH TACTICS

Adelaide coach Josep Gombau has added some spice to tomorrow’s clash with Newcastle, by suggesting the Jets resort to rough tactics to stifle their opponents. Newcastle has committed more fouls than any other club this season, and copped the most yellow cards. Last time the teams met in South Australia, the game featured 21 fouls, five yellows and a red card, in a game the Jets won 2-1. “They cut our actions, our attacking actions, with fouls fouls fouls and this is something that is difficult to play when the other side make a lot of fouls.” Searching for its third win this season, Adelaide will again be without Fabio Ferreira, who missed the Reds’ scoreless draw with Perth last weekend with a groin injury. JETS FINALLY OPEN THEIR ACCOUNT WITH A WIN OVER ADELAIDE

The Newcastle Jets have won their first game of the A-League season, beating Adelaide 2-1. The first half saw plenty of frustration for both sides. Former Adelaide, now Jets flyer, Nathan Burns went agonisingly close to opening the scoring for Newcastle. It took until the 40th minute for Dutch defender Kew Jaliens to break the deadlock.
