PAEDOPHILE PRIEST SENTENCED TO ANOTHER 13 YEARS

A Hunter paedophile priest will spend at least another 13 years behind bars, for abusing 18 boys. 73-year-old John Sidney Denham had already been sentenced to 14 years jail in 2010, for the sexual assault of boys as young as five. In handing down the sentence today, Judge Helen Syme described his crimes as some of the worst the courts have ever seen. She said, at St Pius X College in the Hunter, where Denham taught from 1975 to 1979, the abuse happened “wherever and whenever” Denham wanted. Read More »

MAN CHARGED WITH MALICIOUS WOUNDING

A 43-year-old man will face Coffs Harbour Local Court today, charged with malicious wounding and breaching an apprehended violence order. The man allegedly struck a 29-year-old man with an aluminium torch, while he was at the Jetty with his partner and children last night. He suffered a cut to his head, as well as several chipped teeth. Police say the men are known to each other. Read More »

ZANE TETEVANO DROPPED BY MANLY SEA EAGLES

Former Newcastle Knight Zane Tetevano is without a club for next season, with Manly dropping his contract after he admitted to bashing his girlfriend on four occasions last year. The 23-year-old pleaded guilty to eight charges in Newcastle Local Court on Friday, including common assault and stalking. The Sea Eagles had offered Tetevano a one-year contract last month, but the agreement was not signed by the NRL. In a statement, Manly said it had informed the NRL’s integrity unit of its decision. “Violence against women is an extremely serious issue and is one that the club does not condone or tolerate,” it said. The Sea Eagles are assisting Tetevano with his rehabilitation by linking him with the White Ribbon Campaign. He’s due to be sentenced on March 5. Read More »

COUPLE CHARGED WITH MURDER

A couple charged over the fatal stabbing of a 43-year-old Wauchope man last Friday appeared in Port Macquarie Local Court on Wednesday morning. 38-year-old Trudy Jane Sheiles is facing one count of murder, while 43-year-old Ryan James Smith is accused of being an accessory after the fact to murder. MAN CHARGED AFTER ALLEGED ATTACK ON BUS DRIVER

A 28-year-old Waratah man has been charged after he allegedly attacked a bus driver in Raymond Terrace. Just before 6pm yesterday, the 44-year-old driver spoke to two passengers about their use of offensive language during a trip from the Hunter Valley to Port Stephens. One of the men got off at the next stop in Raymond Terrace. When the driver asked the second man to leave, he was allegedly punched and hit over the head with a full bottle of alcohol. Police say the man continued to assault the driver after he fell to the floor. He was chased to Parkway Avenue before officers arrived. It’s alleged he also threatened them with a knife, but dropped the weapon after police drew their gun. The man is due to face Raymond Terrace Local Court today. Read More »

MIAMI BAG SNATCHER ALLEGEDLY USED BROTHER’S NAME IN COURT

There’s been a bizarre twist in the case of an alleged Miami bag snatcher. The accused- arrested on Tuesday, after a 58 year old amputee was attacked- is alleged to have given police a false name, adopting the identity of his brother William Lethern. The real accused, Christian Lethern, faced Court yesterday, under his younger brother’s name. Neither his lawyer, the Prosecutor nor the Magistrate were aware of the mix-up. Last night, Watchhouse staff clued-on. This morning, the robbery charge against William was struck out, police confirming he had no involvement in the incident. Christian is now facing charges of robbery and serious assault on police. He’ll be back in court tomorrow, and may face a charge of perverting the course of justice. Read More »

He was stopped for allegedly speeding in a school zone- with a baby in the backseat- but ran from his car. He’s charged with possessing dangerous drugs, wilful damage, trespass, drink-driving and obstructing police.
