TWO CHARGED AFTER ARMED HOLD UP

Two teenagers have been charged and another man is on the run, following an attempted armed robbery at Cardiff last night. Three men, armed with a knife and sledgehammer, entered the Iron Horse hotel on Main Road just before midnight and allegedly threatened an employee. The group was unable to get cash from the safe and fled when police arrived. An 18-year-old man and a 19-year-old man were arrested a short time later and charged with intent to rob while armed with an offensive weapon. They’ll face Toronto Local Court today. Read More »

MAN CHARGED OVER CARDIFF STABBING

A man has been charged over a stabbing at Cardiff at the weekend. Police say an argument broke out between a two men on Saturday night at a home on Wendy Street. It’s alleged a 34-year-old man stabbed a 29-year-old man multiple times in the abdomen. He was taken to John Hunter Hospital where he remains in a stable condition. RIDE-ON LAWNMOWER ACCIDENT IN CARDIFF

A man aged in his 30s had a nasty run-in with a ride-on lawnmower at Cardiff this morning. He was cutting grass along Myall Road, when the slope caused the mower to topple. Both the machine and its driver fell down the hill, with the mower landing on his leg. The man was pinned under the ride-on for a short time, before being freed and taken to John Hunter Hospital in a stable condition. Read More »

MAN CHARGED AFTER TENSE STAND-OFF WITH POLICE

A 38-year-old man has been charged, following a tense stand-off with police, which lasted more than three hours. Officers were called to Arthur Street in Cardiff South at around 9:30 this morning, and were allegedly confronted by a man with a knife who was threatening self harm. Negotiators and the State Protection Support Unit were called in to assist. “Upon arrival shortly after, the man handed himself into police and was taken into custody.” The man has been refused bail and will face Newcastle Local Court tomorrow. JOBS AT RISK, CARDIFF MEDICAL WAREHOUSE TO CLOSE

Around 30 jobs at a medical warehouse in Cardiff are at risk, following the state government’s plans to privatise parts of the public health system. The Health Services Union says medical supplies will be outsourced to a corporation in Western Sydney, with no guarentees employees will regain their positions. “Premier Mike Baird has now clearly indicated his preference to sacrifice public health services and support big business in the delivery of health care in NSW,” said HSU Secretary Gerard Hayes. The Cardiff warehouse is one of five to close by the end of 2015. Read More »

MAN CHARGED WITH DRUG-RELATED OFFENCES

A 43-year-old Cardiff man will face court next month, charged with a string of drug-related offences. Police say he was driving along Main Road at Cardiff at around 6 o’clock last night, when he allegedly collided with a parked car and ran from the scene. Officers say they chased the man on foot before he was arrested. It’s alleged they found amphetamine, cannabis, heroin and LSD during a search of his van and the surrounding area. MAN CHARGED AFTER ALLEGEDLY CRASHING STOLEN CAR

A Toronto man will face court today on 11 charges, after crashing a stolen car near Newcastle yesterday. Police were called to Cardiff at around 6:30am after a Ford Falcon utility was stolen. They located the vehicle in Wallsend and began a pursuit, but it was terminated a short time later. The ute came to a stop in Cardiff at the intersection of Main Road and Harrison Street, after the driver allegedly lost control, hitting several cars and a pedestrian who was getting into a taxi. The pedestrian was taken to John Hunter Hospital with minor injuries. The 25-year-old driver of the ute has been charged with several offences including aggravated break, enter and steal and negligent driving. Read More »

A 25-year-old man has been arrested following a crash near Newcastle, which allegedly injured a pedestrian. Police were called to Cardiff at around 6:30 this morning after a Ford Falcon utility was allegedly stolen. They located the vehicle in Wallsend and began a pursuit, but that was terminated a short time later due to safety concerns. The ute came to a stop in Cardiff at the intersection of Main Road and Harrison Street, after the driver allegedly lost control, hitting several cars and a pedestrian who was getting into a taxi. The pedestrian was taken to John Hunter Hospital in a non-life threatening condition. The driver of the ute has been taken to Charlestown Police Station. Read More »

AMWU SAYS LAY OFF IS ANOTHER BLACK MARK FOR GOVERNMENT

The Australian Manufacturing Workers Union says the layoff of close to 200 jobs at a Cardiff rail firm Downer EDI, is another black mark for the state government. NSW Organiser Cory Wright, says the government was made aware of the difficulties faced by the firm last year, yet failed to offer any clarity on future rail contracts for local industry. “There is a looming jobs crisis across regional NSW and Western Sydney yet the Government continues to sit on its hands in regards to allowing the local manufacturing industry a level playing field to compete,” Mr Wright said.
