TRUCK DRIVER ASSAULTED OFFICERS, RAN TRAFFIC OFF ROAD POLICE SAY

A truck driver has allegedly lashed out at police, after being pulled over on the Pacific Motorway at Mudgeeraba last night. Police intercepted the B-Double truck after it was seen forcing cars off the road. There were reports the man had taunted police, asking them to shoot him. WOMAN CHARGED AFTER ALLEGED TRAIN ASSAULT

A 33-year-old woman has been charged over an alleged assault at Gosford Railway Station. About 12.45pm yesterday, the woman boarded a northbound train at Central before becoming aggressive towards other passengers as the train approached Woy Woy. At Gosford, it’s alleged the woman assaulted a 73-year-old woman as they excited the train. The woman was arrested a short time later and charged with common assault and assaulting police. MAN DIES AFTER CENTRAL COAST ASSAULT

A man has died after he was allegedly assaulted on the Central Coast last year. The 56-year-old man was allegedly approached and then punched in the head by a 22-year-old man who had been driving a white utility on Griffith Road, Mannering Park on Thursday the 12th of December last year. The victim died in Royal North Shore Hospital on Monday. Members from Strike Force Mooneye arrested a 22-year-old man in Coonabarabran on Friday the 17th January and charged him with grevious bodily harm with intent. Refused bail, the man remains in custody to appear in Newcastle Court in March with police expected to upgrade the charges. Read More »

ROGERS CASE ADJOURNED TO APRIL

  Former Newcastle Knights player turned club official Ben Rogers is due to face Newcastle Local Court on April 8, in relation to two assault charges. Rogers was excused from court today and his solicitor Alison Nowland said that, from her understanding, there are no prospects of the case being settled. Magistrate Stone attempted to set a hearing date in February, but Ms Nowland explained that Rogers won’t be available until April, as he’ll be overseas. Ms Nowland also told the court four witnesses will be called for the defence during the hearing. Rogers is accused of punching two men at a taxi rank outside Wests at New Lambton last year. He was subsequently charged with two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm.     Read More »

FAN FACES COURT ON ASSAULT CHARGES

A man charged with two counts of assault following fiery scenes at a Newcastle Jets match late last year,¬†pleaded NOT guilty in Newcastle Court today. Danny Burt is accused of assaulting police during December’s clash between the Jets and Western Sydney at Hunter Stadium. The 41-year-old was later also charged with assaulting an 18-year-old man. Burt is due to reappear in Newcastle Local Court on February 27. Read More »

Newcastle Lord Mayor, Jeff McCLoy, has weighed in on the adaptability of the so-called Newcastle Model for Sydney in an opinion piece, following the death of Daniel Christie at the weekend. He states the model “may not suit a blanket application to an international city like Sydney”, despite Premier Barry O’Farrell being urged to trial it in the city, following a spate of alcohol related violence. “Sydney, with its sophisticated tourism markets, could roll out model measures in some areas and quarantine others, but first get the relevant agencies to collaborate on a way forward. “For Newcastle, our simple presumption was the more alcohol consumed, the more outrageous the behaviour, and the more violence. HUNT FOR MAN FOLLOWING SERIOUS ASSAULT

Police are on the hunt for a man following a serious assault in Terrigal last month. A large brawl broke out on the corner of Church street and Kurrawyba avenue in the early hours of Sunday 29th December. One man received a serious head injury. BOY CHARGED AFTER UNPROVOKED BEACH ATTACK

PHOTO: Nobbys Beach.¬† A 17-year-old boy has been charged after an unprovoked attack on another teen at a Newcastle Beach yesterday. The boy was leaving the surf club at Nobbys Beach when he was punched in the face. Police were called to the beach where they arrested and charged the alleged offender with assault and intimidation. He was granted bail and will appear before Broadmeadow Children’s Court next month. The victim was treated by paramedics at the scene. Read More »

KNIGHTS PLAYER SENTENCED TO TWO YEARS JAIL FOLLOWING ASSAULT

Newcastle Knights player Russell Packer has been sentenced to two years jail after pleading guilty to an assault in Sydney last year. Packer punched the man in Martin Place in November after being kicked out of a nearby hotel. The Downing Centre Local Court heard this morning the 24-year-old had been asked to leave the hotel because he was so drunk. He then walked 20 metres to a public area, where he got into an argument and punched a man in the face multiple times and stomped on his head as he lay motionless on the ground. The victim was left with two fractured bones. The jail sentence came as a surprise to Packer’s lawyer, with Magistrate Greg Grogan calling the 24-year-old’s behaviour cowardly and deplorable.
