FOUR JETS WON’T BE RE-SIGNED NEXT SEASON

Four Newcastle Jets players have today been informed they will not be re-signed for the 2015-16 A-league season. Among the surprise exits is Hunter-bred junior Taylor Regan, along with utility Sam Gallagher, goalkeeper John Solari and James Virgili. 26-year-old Regan has played his entire career with the Jets, starting in the club’s National Youth League team. Meanwhile Max Burgess remains in discussions with the club, while Equadorian attacker Edson Montano is under consideration by management. It’s also negotiating to retain Enver Alivodic. “Today the coaching staff had to deliver some tough decisions to some great people. We certainly wish each of the guys that are leaving the club the very best in their respective futures,” said coach Phil Stubbins. Read More »

Coal Point boxer Rocky Jerkic has high profile opponents lining up to challenge him, following his impressive third round knock out of Adrian Campbell on Friday night. Campbell had never been taken down in 30 previous fights. Jerkic was due to travel to the US following the bout, but is now likely to step back into the ring in Newcastle in around two months. Manny Siaca, a former world champion from Puerto Rico, who’s gone toe to toe with both Danny Green and Anthony Mundine, has offered to fight the 27-year-old for his WBA Asia junior middleweight title. WINNING DOUBLE FOR NORTH STARS

The Newcastle North Stars have beaten the Canberra Brave seven goals to four, to complete a winning double at home on the opening weekend of the Australian Ice Hockey League season. Brian Bales got the home side on the board early in the first period. [Notes:20 secs] Two of the North Stars imports combined for the second. Two-nil soon became three, as Luke Moffat grabbed a goal of his own. The Brave managed to hit back late in the period, but Newcastle was always in control. The Knights’ Jeremy Smith has accepted a grade one tripping charge following the clash with the Cowboys and will be free to face Manly in round nine. Meanwhile Jarrod Mullen has been ruled out of the Country side after he suffered a concussion against North Queensland. Fresh from their win over the Bulldogs yesterday, the Knights Nathan Ross and Chanel Mata’utia have been named in the New South Wales Cup representative side. Good news for the Newcastle North Stars, who beat the Adelaide Adrenaline 6-4 last night, in the opening round of the Australian Ice Hockey League. It didn’t take the hosts long to open their 2015 account, taking the lead inside 20 seconds. Adelaide replied in the first period to make it one-all. But the second period belonged to Newcastle. Brian Bales set up goal number two… before the North Stars went on a scoring spree, starting with Luke Moffat. “Moffat dinks, shoots, scores, that was dirty.” Shane Southwood and Rob Starke quickly made it 5-1, before Newcastle survived a late fightback by the Adrenaline in the final period. It’s been a tough afternoon for the Hunter Hurricanes in the National Water Polo League, with both the men’s and women’s sides losing their final home game of the season to the Seals. The Victorian girls were always in control. By the end of the third quarter, the visitors were way out in front, 14-6. The Hurricanes had plenty of chances, but the game wasn’t going according to plan. The men’s match was a much closer affair. Playing his 300th game in the national league, Phil Reid got the Hunter off to a great start with two goals in the opening quarter. Steve Cody chipped in with a goal from an impossible angle. HOOLE SIGNS OFF BY WINNING JETS TOP AWARD

Sydney FC recruit Andrew Hoole has taken out two major gongs at the Jets’ end of season awards. The North Lambton local was named Player of the Year and also won the Ray Baartz Medal, handed out by Newcastle’s Men of Football.
