GIDLEY TO PLAY IN ENGLISH SUPER LEAGUE

Newcastle Knights skipper Kurt Gidley has announced he’s signed a one-year contract with the Warrington Wolves in the English Super League. The Newcastle local has played 236 NRL games, in a career spanning 15 years. Gidley also boasts an impressive representative track record, including 12 appearances in the NSW State of Origin and 12 for Australia. “I have been lucky, to grow up in Newcastle, to have my family’s support and to play for this great Club,” he said. The North Stars have maintained top spot in the AIHL thanks to back-to-back wins in Melbourne. Taking on defending champions – the Mustangs – on Saturday, goaltender Dayne Davis proved invaluable, making several crucial saves. At the other end, a hat-trick to Luke Moffatt and a goal to Mat Lindsay sealed the 4-3 win. Newcastle then beat the Melbourne Ice 4-2 last night. Two of the Hunter’s top basketballers have done plenty to impress Australian coach Brendan Joyce, during a training camp on the Central Coast. Newcastle/Hunter’s game plan at the New South Wales Country Rugby Championships was to play an expansive game, with speed out wide, but conditions at Bowral didn’t help the cause. Instead, the wet weather played into the hands of the local Illawarra rep side, and its big forward pack.
