DEFENCE RECRUITS FAREWELLED IN NEWCASTLE

The Defence Force has held a special ceremony in Newcastle today, to send off one of the region’s largest contingents of R-double-A-F and Army cadets. The 17 cadets were sworn in, before they make their way to the Australian Defence Force Academy in Canberra. “Newcastle are actually taking on the highest amount of ADFA recruits this year and for the last few years. WEATHER: FLOODING RAIN FOR SOUTH EAST QUEENSLAND

South east Queensland has copped a deluge, causing flooding and rock slides. The beaches have been closed and there is more to come over night. Across the border, rain totals have also been high for the Northern Rivers, causing flooding. The intense rain system will begin to weaken early tomorrow and conditions will ease, but the damage will be done. Cloud has spread affecting most of the broadcast region with showers falling as far south as the Upper Hunter and Tamworth. Most of the Australia Day long weekend is looking okay for most – cloud with only small scattered showers about for Saturday and Sunday. PAEDOPHILE PRIEST SENTENCED TO ANOTHER 13 YEARS

A Hunter paedophile priest will spend at least another 13 years behind bars, for abusing 18 boys. 73-year-old John Sidney Denham had already been sentenced to 14 years jail in 2010, for the sexual assault of boys as young as five. In handing down the sentence today, Judge Helen Syme described his crimes as some of the worst the courts have ever seen. She said, at St Pius X College in the Hunter, where Denham taught from 1975 to 1979, the abuse happened “wherever and whenever” Denham wanted. Read More »

MID NORTH COAST COUPLE SPEAKS AFTER HOME SEARCHED

A mid north coast couple, whose home was searched by forensic police in relation to the investigation of William Tyrell, has denied any involvement in the three-year-old’s disappearance. Bill and Margaret Spedding have spoken exclusively to the Nine Network, after their Bonny Hills property was raided earlier this week. “It has been very difficult. I wish to thank our family, our friends for the overwhelming support we have received from them both at this time,” said Mr Spedding. Officers also raided a unit on the corner of Bold and Seymour Streets at Laurieton, used by the couple as a business.. A mattress, computer equipment and three cars are among items being forensically examined. Mr and Mrs Spedding have been questioned by police and were released without charge. MAN CHARGED AFTER ALLEGED ATTEMPTED STABBING

A Merewether man has been charged with a string of offences, after he allegedly attempted to stab a man in Newcastle. Police allege he approached a man and a woman sitting in a park on King Street just before 6pm yesterday, and lunged at the man twice with a knife. He was arrested a short time later on Hunter Street. The man was also charged with assault, following an alleged incident at a shopping centre at The Junction on Wednesday. MAN CHARGED WITH CHILD PORNOGRAPHY OFFENCES

A Hunter man will face court next month, charged with child pornography offences. Officers working on an inter-agency covert operation in 2012, say the 50-year-old was allegedly sharing child abuse material online. A Commonwealth Search Warrant was issued for the man’s Weston home, where he was arrested yesterday. Police also seized computers, external storage devices and mobile phones. The man’s been granted conditional bail and is due to appear before Cessnock Local Court on February 26. Read More »

AGL CLEARED OF BREACHES RELATING TO FLOWBACK WATER DISPOSAL

AGL has been cleared of any breaches to environment protection licences, relating to the disposal of flowback water from its coal seam gas project in Gloucester. The energy company, contractor Transpacific and Hunter Water were all asked to provide information to the EPA. “The EPA received the information requested and has reviewed it and determined that there has been no breach of environmental legislation or environment protection licences by AGL or Transpacific in relation to this matter,” said Hunter Manager Adam Gilligan. AGL reported itself to the watchdog, after water monitoring found traces of a chemical used in the CSG fracking process. Hunter Water has however issued Transpacific with a default notice, citing four breaches of its trade wastewater agreement. Read More »

Queensland has been swamped with heavy falls causing flash flooding. That threat is set to move into the south east corner, with moderate to heavy falls spilling across the border into north east New South Wales over the next 24 to 48 hours. Conditions will ease on Sunday, but there’s going to be some rain about across the Australia Day long weekend, affecting most regions. Those falls are going to be lighter and scattered. Read More »

WOMAN DEAD & SIX OTHERS INJURED IN NORTH COAST CRASH

A woman has died and six others are injured following a head-on car crash on the North Coast. Just before 1pm, a Suzuki SX4 and a Mazda Astina collided along Kyogle Road, about 5-kilometres north of Uki. Emergency services were called, but the female driver of the Mazda died at the scene. Her female passenger was airlifted to Gold Coast Hospital in a serious condition, while the driver of the Suzuki was taken to Tweed Heads Hospital. Four children aged between three and 15, who were passengers in the Suzuki, were taken to hospital with various injuries. Anyone with information is urged to contact police. Read More »
